Roger Federer’s return to the Australian Open after six years sparked excitement and nostalgia among tennis fans worldwide. The last time Federer played the ‘Happy Slam’ was in 2020, with his campaign ending in a loss to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. For many, his return felt as though a missing piece of the sport had finally been restored, as the Swiss returned not as a competitor, but as a guest of honor at the tournament’s opening ceremony.

Before the main exhibition began, Federer showed off his still impeccable timing in a practice session with world number 12, Casper Ruud. To the delight of a packed Rod Laver Arena, Federer claimed a 7-2 victory in a practice tie-break, showing off his vintage backhand with a down the line winner.

“I’m just loving Melbourne for what it is. It’s just nice to come down here after so many years and just have fun,” Federer said in an on court interview after the practice session. “It’s a trip down memory lane and a bit of nostalgia”

Federer played in the arena once again on the following day for the “Battle of the World No. 1s” exhibition. The event was the headliner for the inaugural opening ceremony for the Australian Open.

“Seeing Roger back on court, even just for an exhibition, reminds you why we all fell in love with the game in the first place,” commented Jim Courier.

The match began with Federer pairing alongside American legend Andre Agassi to take on the beloved Australian duo of Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt. It was a masterclass in touch and volleys, as the four icons traded signature shots and lighthearted jabs across the net.

“I thought I was retired, but running around with these guys makes me feel like I’m twenty again, even if my knees say otherwise,” Pat Rafter joked during a mid-match sideline interview.

As the exhibition progressed, Agassi let himself rest as another Australian star joined in. Three time Grand Slam Champ, Ash Barty took the reins as her and Federer secured a 4-2 victory in the final set, closing the night on a high note.

“I have missed you and it’s great to be back,” Federer said. “It's just where we left off, so many memories and it's nice to dive back into it. It was beautiful and I couldn’t be happier.”
