Carlos Alcaraz downed Alexander Zverev to win his first French Open title. The match went the distance, a 5 set thriller with Alcaraz coming back from 2 sets to 1 down to win the match.
The match started off with the two players exchanging breaks and getting accustomed to the windy conditions. Alcaraz quickly took the lead, breaking at 2-2 and taking the first set 6-3.
Zverev upped his level in the 2nd set, producing much better tennis and a higher level of intensity. He took the set with ease, winning it 6-2.
The momentum seemed to have shifted to Alcaraz in the 3rd set, breaking Zverev to go up 5-2. The set looked to be going the way of the Spaniard, but the German had other plans. He held his serve, and broke twice to win the set 7-5.
The Spaniard looked in trouble having lost the third set from being up 5-2 but he maintained his composure, shifting the momentum of the match in a very impressive fashion. Following an exchange of breaks between the two players, Alcaraz took a medical timeout and then held his serve to force a decider.
After going up two breaks in the beginning of the set, Alcaraz had all of the momentum, he held serve to take the final set 6-2.
The 21 year became the youngest man to achieve the Surface Slam, having won a Grand Slam title on all 3 surfaces. He is unbeaten in Grand Slam finals, having defeated Casper Ruud to take the US Open title in 2022 and Novak Djokovic for the 2023 Wimbledon title. This is another impressive milestone for Alcaraz whose career is shaping up to be simply incredible.
