Zhizhen Zhang pulled off a dramatic win over Daniil Medvedev to reach the quarters of the Halle Open.
From being down 3-5 in the deciding tiebreak, the Chinese world number 1 clawed back to stun the world number 5, becoming the first Chinese player to reach the Halle Open quarterfinals.
The 27 year old recovered from an early break in the second set to pocket his second top 5 win of his career, with a victory over Casper Ruud at last years US Open.
At the end of the week, Zhizhen Zhang will reach a career high of at least 39 in the world, depending on his result against the American, Christopher Eubanks, who is coming off of a win against the defending champion, Alexander Bublik 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3. This will be the the first time the two players ever play each other.
Medvedev is currently 28-9 this season with his best results being at the Australian open and Indian Wells. He was aiming for a 10th consecutive ATP 500 quarterfinal as he looks to prepare for Wimbledon.
